Maths books I have liked

By Mrs. Toni Beardon (Lab11) on Sunday, October 22, 2000 - 02:16 pm:

Hi everyone,

There has already been some discussion about maths books on this webboard in the thread 'Just Inquisitive'.

More NRICHers would like to share their views about maths books. How about you? What have you enjoyed reading (or disliked)? Have any of the books you have read changed your own opinions about maths. What would you recommend and why?

All best wishes,
Toni

I am currently in the middle of Chaos by James Gleick which is excellent. There's not a lot of complex maths, but getting your head around some of it is tricky. How much you get out depends on how deeply you are prepared to think.

I read 'Game, Set and Math' by Ian Stewart which is entertaining and fun and have 'From here to infinity' on my list of things to read. I also have the epic What Is Mathematics which is over 50 years old, but contains everything you might need to know. It's not one to read cover to cover but is very interesting to dip into to go above the syllabus on what we are being taught at school. It has just been updated by Ian Stewart who hasn't changed anything, but added some more up-to-date things.

Any comments on other books that you think I would enjoy?

I read "What is Mathematics?" (almost) from cover to cover before my Cambridge Interview and found it excellent
